This past month, many of Musselman’s varsity swim team competed in the state swim meet at Morgantown. This year’s state team made sure to always put in hard work, skill, and determination at every meet, and as a result of this, the team had a very successful time. Swimmers placed in different events and even broke many school records for both boys and girls.
Senior and varsity captain, Mikaela Tyson, says that her experience at states was “memorable.” Alongside Marit Irgens, Taylor Peterson, and Brianna Shink, Mikaela and her relay team broke the school record for the girls 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:19:54.
However, this wasn’t the only school record set for the girls at the meet. Marit Irgens placed 6th in the 100 backstroke and set a school record at 4:19:54. Irgens also placed 5th in the 500 freestyle at the state meet.
“States was very good. I got to spend time with friends and I did well at the meet,” Irgens explains. She says her favorite part about the trip was “the opportunity to swim against people who have been swimming longer and who are better than me.” This is what makes Irgens a better swimmer, she tells us.
Alongside the girls, the boys also had a very successful meet. Starting with their 400 free relay, Logan Stewart, Sawyer Wright, Christian Cox, and Daniel Sandlin all set a school record at 3:35:37. Logan Stewart also broke the boys 100 backstroke record with a time of 1:01:35. In the end, the boys team placed 17th out of 46 schools and the girls 18th.
Overall, the team had a very successful time at states. Many medals were won as well as records were broken. The Musselman swim team as a whole had a very successful season! Musselman anticipates what next year brings on for the team!
