The Conjuring series has been out for over a decade now. This year’s release, The Conjuring: Last Rites, is the final chapter in the story of the Paranormal Investigators lives, Ed and Lorraine Warren, and why they decided to stop. But did it live up to the other movies? Fans have been waiting on this last addition of the franchise for almost three years since they first announced it in October 2022.
The film follows the real life case of the Smurl family, who reported a series of alleged hauntings in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, during the 1980s. In real life, it took the Warrens over ten years to check out the case but the producers changed the pacing of it to fit into a better timeline for the movie. The Warrens believed the family was plagued by a powerful demonic presence. Skeptics, however, thought that the events were being exaggerated or had natural explanations, leaving people to debate if it was real or not.
The Conjuring cinematic universe has always been a comfort watch for horror enthusiasts, and Last Rites marks the fourth and final installment in Ed and Lorraine Warren’s story. This chapter feels like the most emotional one yet: creepy, and unnerving, while also serving as a heartfelt tribute to family, and love.
Some people are not happy with the outcome of the movie saying that it was boring, not scary, and overall not worth the watch. Others had absolutely loved it, saying it was the best way to wrap up the film franchise. While yes, it was slow in the first half of the movie, it was also about the effect that the paranormal has on the Warrens’ lives. Although the movie has mixed reviews, it has done well at the box office, placing at top 10 movies this month. Even if it’s not the scariest of the franchise, I think it’s a great movie to sit down with friends and family to watch this fall.
