Sensory Prom is an event which gives students who may get overwhelmed at prom a chance to have fun with their peers. Every special education student at schools in Berkeley County was invited to go to this magical event which gave them something positive to remember after highschool.
The 2025 Sensory Prom was a major success, leaving many students, hosts and guests, with smiles on their faces. Each guest at the event was welcomed and paired with a host who was either a student council member, leadership student, or a positive, well-rounded student from their own school. Hosts were provided with the name of the guest they would be accompanying at the event so they could greet them with a warm smile.
The experience was made specifically for the guests by having sensory stations. These stations aimed to calm down guests by using tools that would reduce anxiety to help them enjoy the dance floor. Food and drinks were provided at the event, which allowed extra time for the hosts and guests to get to know each other. Each guest received their very own sash and crown to make their night even more magical. This year’s accessories were given by Olivia Travis, Miss West Virginia’s Teen USA. Afterwards, their names were announced and they walked the red carpet to show off their personalities.
The event organizers were very careful with trying their best to not cause any triggers the guests may have had. Several rules were put in place, one being jazz hands instead of clapping to prevent the possible trigger of loud noises. Sensory Prom was a truly heartwarming event which showed what Berkeley County’s Special Education department leaders have been working hard to continue throughout the years.
