Coach Derek Metz has spent approximately eight years of his life coaching wrestlers. After wrestling in high school for four years — two years at Hedgesville and two years at Spring Mills — Coach Metz decided to turn to coaching.
He said he always wanted to be a coach.
“It is all I have ever known. I grew up doing it and I didn’t really plan my life to do anything else so it just kind of fell in my life that way,” said Coach Metz.
He said he enjoys watching the kids learn and grow over the course of a high school career and has big plans for his wrestlers. Being Head Coach for the first time as of the 2024-2025 season, he is just getting started and has already played such a big part in his wrestlers’ careers.
“He mainly focused on making us better wrestlers and he accomplished that goal, overall. I think he has a lot of plans coming up for future seasons especially since this was only his first year as head coach. I am excited to see what he does,” said Maddox Canfield, a wrestler for Musselman.
“I have absolutely become a better wrestler with him as coach. He has taught a lot of useful moves and based practice around getting better as wrestlers.” said Canfield.
