Some of the biggest things about a movie is marketing, personally I find myself hating when a movie is marketed too much. Kids movies are a prime example of this, but what happens when a movie is under marketed? Sometimes it’s for good reason, but other times it can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Which brings us into our review for today: Transformers One. This movie released back on September 20th of 2024 to where It saw an audience of majority die-hard fans and children.
One thing I can confidently say is that this movie is not your average kids movie. Yes there are things that kids can enjoy like the adventure, action scenes, and the sheer fact of them being Transformers alone, but the adult themes in this film are unmatched. The list of themes contains slavery, oppression, war, political corruption, and lastly violence. Truly the screenplay from Eric Pearson, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari is fantastic for a movie that’s only rated PG. This movie and others like it such as Shrek are a perfect example of an actual PG movie, to where the movie is funny and fun as a kid but as you get older you start to realize the more adult jokes and themes which can almost make it better for some. Another thing this movie is good at is its voice cast which is stacked, with such big names as: Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Micheal Key, Jon Hamm, Laurence Fishburne, etc. Especially the performance of Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron or D-16, he is amazing in this film and I wish he was given more recognition as an actor.
As I’ve said in the beginning this movie was sadly under-marketed and went under the radar which is surprising for it having the Transformers name attached to it. I think it’s also due in part because the marketing for this film mainly advertised towards kids which put a lot of people off, and also the Transformers franchise has had a lot of reboots so another new continuity also probably didn’t help that either.
I would normally explain the plot of the movie and I know I’ve done this so many times, but please watch this film for yourself. It has plans for a sequel but it only opened with $24 million dollars and sadly has only passed its budget of $75 million dollars about three weeks ago (Box Office Mojo). Transformers One is a great time and experience and a perfect introduction into the franchise for newcomers
