This current year, the National Arts Honor Society has offered activities to aid students in getting involved within the school.
Though the NAHS has held various activities inside and outside of the school prior to this year, this club has decided to volunteer more of their time to incorporate services to staff and students who appreciate art.
Mrs. Bonnie Shirley and Mrs. Melissia Burton are both art teachers at MuHS and the club advisors.
“I love that creative artsy students get to be involved with the school in their way. The organization gets to inspire students who demonstrate an interest and ability in art to leave their artistic mark on their school community,” stated Mrs. Burton.
Some ways that NAHS has incorporated students include, but not limited to, painting the library logo, Mr. Barkers office, front door mats, pep wear, and face painting for an anti-bullying event that took place in Martinsburg. Additionally, the NAHS has tie dyed the staff’s shirts that they wear on Mondays.
Ms. Bennet, a science teacher, has given input on her experience “Its great, it has been a 10/10 experience”
The NAHS is a serious group, they are persistent and set goals for themselves.
“The goals of the National Art Honor Society is to bring attention to art education while helping members achieve the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service” Burton stated.
To be in NAHS club, a student must have one year of a visual arts class, participate in the club for a certain number of hours, and every school year a student must take another visual arts class along with adding ten additional service hours.
“Those additional hours and class time earn you a rainbow cord and tassel for graduation. You do also have to maintain an overall 3.0 GPA with a 3.5 in your arts classes,” stated Burton.
Currently Mrs. Burton has two spotlight students: Taylor Munson who is the president and Sophie Carpenter who is the clubs vice president.
“[They] have been invaluable” Burton exclaimed.
Some future events from NAHS to look forward to are painting a cello, a painting for the girls’ soccer team, the English wing girl’s bathroom, a cafeteria mural, Mr. Rizer’s office, and a winter paint night.
