With the start of the 2024-25 school year at Musselman High School came the creation of a new club: Musselman Media Club.
Mr. Matt Welch took on another responsibility, in addition to his broadcasting class, to start the club to focus on sharpening students’ media skills.
“I want to give students an opportunity to get behind the camera and learn more whether it is sports, theater, [or] whatever events we have going on during school or after school. I just wanted students to be able to have an opportunity to take part in that,” Welch said.
Welch said there are two parts to the club — one part of the club being able to film live events like sports, pep rallies, any events going on in and outside of school and the other side having students make cinematic short films. Students can come up with any ideas for these short films and have fun with them.
This gives students an opportunity to use a camera that they do not have to buy and to learn from an experienced person.
Welch has a history in journalism and photography. He wants kids to leave with experience and hope to follow their dream whether it is in journalism, photography, filming, or any of the other opportunities in that field.
“I want kids to be comfortable being behind the camera. We are going to learn more than just filming,” Welch said.
I hope to teach them editing and things like that too. Stuff that we do not always have time to get to on a different level in class, especially the upper-level classes. Just for them to be comfortable and creative.”
This club gives students who are not able to take the broadcasting class a chance to still get behind the camera and learn how to film and edit. This is another great addition to the many other clubs we have here at MuHS.
