The PLC here at Musselman High School has undergone significant changes this year, marked by the addition of both new faculty members and administrators. Among these changes is the addition of a new principal through Mr. Rizer, a familiar face who has transitioned from his previous role as a math teacher to his current position as principal within the PLC.
Mr. Rizer’s journey within the educational realm is extensive, having dedicated himself to teaching math at Musselman since 2011 before ascending as principal in February. His years as an educator have been enriched by a diverse educational background, including a Bachelor’s in Education from Shepherd University, a Master’s from Ohio State University, and an administrative degree from Salem University. With this wealth of experience and academic credentials, he brings a deep understanding of the school system to his new leadership role within the PLC.
When asked why he chose Musselman, Mr. Rizer emphasized the special culture of the school, noting that even after experiencing different high schools and student teaching elsewhere, Musselman stood out to him. He expressed pride in being part of the community. As for his feelings about the current year and his future at Musselman, Mr. Rizer acknowledged the transition but expressed optimism, noting that he’s constantly learning and is excited about the future of the PLC.
Reflecting on his journey from educator to administrator, Mr. Rizer candidly shared his motivations, stating, “I’ve always wanted to help kids, I felt the desire to help students and young adults to achieve goals, something I’ve always enjoyed. Administration is different because I’m helping different types of students.”
Mr. Rizer’s personality shines through his approach to education and discipline. Describing himself as outgoing and approachable, he finds it easy to get along well with others, a trait that contributes to his effectiveness as a leader within the school community.
When it comes to his teaching philosophy, Mr. Rizer emphasizes consistency and high expectations, believing in being tough but fair with his students. He understands the importance of setting clear boundaries and maintaining them which ensures that students have the structure they need to succeed academically and personally.
